ATTENDANCE, TARDIES & REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCES

Regular school attendance is critical to academic success for children.  Arriving at school on time and ready to learn teaches a strong work ethic and helps build responsibility.  However, children should be kept home when they are ill.  Ample time will be provided for them to make up any work that is missed.
If your child is going to be absent from school, please call and leave a recorded message at 582-9357.  Students are excused if absent because of illness.  If a child is tardy (is not in class line by the 7:45 am bell) he/she must check in to school through the Front Office before being admitted to class.  Frequent tardies without a valid excuse are considered a truancy under the law. Students with continued tardies and/or unexcused absences will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) for disciplinary action.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Parents play a vital role in making Viejo Elementary School a success. During Back to School Night, teachers will discuss the many ways parents can be involved in their child's education.  We rely heavily on parents to assist us both inside and outside the classroom, as well as at home.  Viejo Elementary School maintains an active PTA.  Ongoing opportunities are made available to help plan our many school events.  All parents are invited and encouraged to join the PTA and to attend the meetings on alternating months beginning in September.
Another way to get involved is through our English Language Acquisition Committee (ELAC).  ELAC is a program for parents of students whose first language is not English. ELAC meets four times a year. Participants learn about school news, programs and events, and also benefit from special speakers on a variety of subjects. The meetings are conducted in Spanish with interpretation into English. If you should have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at 582 2424.
